Critical Mass / RVCA

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

Critical Mass started in San Fransisco circa 1992.  It’s basically a monthly bike ride to help bring people together and share a joy for riding on the road. If you visit Crical Mass Info you can find out more information about CM rides all over the US. I suggest you join one, they are fun and a great way to meet people. A group of guys on LA FIXED decided to hold an Orange County CM ride around Costa Mesa that would end at RVCA clothing for the premier of Council of Doom. After hearing about the ride and already planning to hit up the RVCA event we decided to meet up and see what CM is all about. Chris, Shannon and I headed away from RVCA and met up with the gang at Rooster Bar near The Lab in CM (I think that was the name). I would have to guess we had around 300 people show up, the biggest group ride I have ever done. Good times were had by all and only 1 flat tire to speak of!

Back at RVCA the COD guys put on a trick contest so the kids could show off things I will never be able to do on a bike. How that one kid did a front tire skid on a rear fixed gear bike is beyond me. Here are some pics from the eve and be sure to hit up all those links I posted.

Here is a shot of me riding someone took, thanks!

Chris looking tough (as per usual)

Prob one of the best artists I have met. This man is also nuts on a bike!

You cant mob the streets with 300 people and not expect the PO-PO to show. He was cool though.

Back at RVCA everyone chillin

The trick contest started off weak nobody wanted to be center stage. Eventually it picked up but by that time it got pretty tough to get a decent picture.

Made our way into the upstairs offices for a better view

LA bike tour

Sunday, July 27th, 2008

No, the LA Bike Tour isn’t a super long road race it was Chris and I visiting some pretty sweet bike shops on Saturday. We decided to load up his fixed gear and head to Orange 20 Bikes, Bicycle Kitchen and Drif LA.

First up was O20. I heard it was a small shop but didn’t realize it was this small. Were talking about the size of your average bedroom. The building is packed with goodness though. Tons of fixed gear parts, bikes, clothing, accessories, etc… The staff knows their stuff too, they were able to help Chris figure out some of his chain woes. If you are looking for a road bike shop you should skip O20 its all about fixed and commuter bikes. Here are some pics.

Next up was Bicycle Kitchen which is just across the street from O20. They are a non-profit educational bike shop. Everyone there is volunteer their time to help people learn how to work on their bikes. We can all only dream of more places like BK opening up around other towns. They ask $7 per hour to work on your bike which covers the cost to rent the space and keep everyone in tools. The volunteers all know bikes back and forth and you can even check out some bike history hanging from the rafters.

We hoped on the 101 South and headed to Drif LA next. Drif is located in Little Tokyo which is pretty obvious by it’s surroundings. Much like O20 its a very small shop but not nearly as packed as O20. The guy behind the counter was really nice but not super friendly, he definitely gave us the feeling that he had better things to do than be bothered with us.

This all steel tricycle was bad-ass!

We also headed to Kings Bike in Seal Beach. I forgot to snap some pics because I was too busy drooling over a beautiful titanium Serrota bike. Gave it a test ride too, probably shouldn’t have. No, it didn’t come home with me but it really want to! If you are in the Seal Beach area checking Kings Bike they have a great selection of road bikes, clothing and a ton of fixed gear stuff too.

The tour was a blast it was cool seeing the LA shops. I’m addicted to graffiti art so I had to stop and take a few pics along the way. BTW all of the days pics were taken with the iphone.

Council of Doom

Heading down to RVCA in a few minutes to do some riding and hit up the Council of Doom show they are putting on. If you are in the area you should check it out. I am taking a camera so expect pics!

Coming together

Friday, July 25th, 2008

So, I have decided to throw some yellow into the mix on my SS/FX bike. Headed down to Crank Brothers today and had some great customer service thrown my direction. Its refreshing when you can actually walk into a business and walk out happy. Thanks again to the guy that hooked me up today! I brought in my green Candy Ti pedals and swapped them out for a new yellow housing and black springs. Juicy.
