Just what I needed

Wednesday, January 28th, 2009

It’s been a long week. In fact, it’s already been a long month. I haven’t been on the bike since last Saturday’s race because works been slammin me. So, today I took an hour break and decided to hit STT-Luge. The trail is in prestine shape and ready for serious fun. My legs felt great today and the climb up to the flag didn’t seem to phase me much. Shooting down the Luge was a blast, its moist, tacking and starting to sprout some green. Total ride time from the parking lot at Cooks back to the parking lot was 1 hour and 2 minutes. Perfect way to ease some stress off my shoulders in the short amount of free time I had today.

As you can see STT is in phenomenal shape right now. The recent rains have brought the green back. Yes!

First race completed!

Sunday, January 25th, 2009

Well, it’s over. The 12 Hours of Temecula is now in the record books as the first race I have completed. That would be the same for Chris, this was our first race and I have to say it was a success, for us. We went in knowing that we didn’t stand much of a chance standing atop the podium with all the PRO teams involved. Regardless, we wanted to have a good time, turn in some good lap times, and gain valuable race experience. We accomplished just that.

Knowing we needed to be at the race bright and early Saturday morning, we camped out at the local Holiday Inn Express. It’s a good hour and a half drive to the course from my place, which made staying in a  hotel 10 minutes from the event very appealing. We thought about actually camping but the thought of a nice warm bed the night before a big endurance race was too tempting.

Here we have Chris showing his IQ once again.

The good and the bad

Thursday, January 22nd, 2009

Well, these past few days haven’t been the best in my life. The project Tundra I drive was broken into on my street overnight and my laptop bag was stolen. I never ever leave it in the truck overnight and was lazy one night and look what happens. Why me. So, that really didn’t make for a very good week. Today, my work hasn’t been very pleased by this since it was a company laptop and is giving me a ton of shit. Seriously, do they think I broke my own window? WTF

Anyway, Dino edited up a great video of the past year of mountain bike trips from our club. He did a really great job showing why I love riding with the STR gang. Good friends, great trails and lasting memories… Check it out

12 Hours of Temecula this Saturday

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Call me stupid or crazy or both but Chris and I are doing the 12 Hours of Temecula race this coming weekend. We spent some time riding the course last Saturday so we knew what to expect. A good number of people that we know from STR will be taking on the challenge as well. It will be good to have some company during all the pain and suffering that will ensue. It’s a lap race and each lap should take us roughly 1 hour to complete. So, one rides, one rests, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat, etc…

The course is roughly 9 miles long and has 1300 feet of climbing involved. The first 2.5 miles of the course definitely is a wake up call for your legs as half of the climbing is done right away. Once you get on top of the first ridge-line it gets swoopy and fun with some steep downhill sections and tight singletrack. The middle is fast and more open than the rest of the course. There is much more singletrack than I thought there would be considering how many people will be racing. Should make for some interesting clogging on the trail. Hopefully the Elite Pro riders wont get too pissed when my slow ass is in their way! The later half is another climb up the opposite ridge-line and then some more fun singletrack. Our goal is to get in 6 laps each which would give us each just under 60 miles and 7800 feet of climbing each. Should be a good way to get in those training miles we both require for the Coup race in March.

Not sure what jersey I am going to be sporting on the day. Wanna sponsor us? Drop me a comment with your info and we can talk about it!

If you are heading out to the event, look for our pit under a big RVCA tent. It will probably be the only one out there. Come by and say hi, bring us some snacks, massages, hi-fives, just dont eat our food! haha!

Let the fueling begin!

Bag the peak!

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Now that most of the snow has melted from Saddleback, Gene and I decided it was time to bag the peak. The last time I was on these trails they were covered in several feet of snow. Our starting point would be Maple Springs and we would ascend to 4 Corners and then move on the the Peak. The trail was in extremely great shape and it was a perfect day to be on the mountain, a cool 70 degrees most of the way up. We did run into a small bit of snow and ice on the trail near the top, nothing to worry about though. Gene sent me over the pics he snapped of me so for once you can actually see some pics of me riding and not Chris, ha.

Gene and I were both trying out new rear tires for this ride and I can report we both were very happy with our choices. He was riding on a Kenda Small Block Eight and I was giving a Maxxis Crossmark a try. Both tires provided plenty of grip even when standing and grinding. On the way down we both had no problems holding our line. Time will tell if this will be the tire I choose for the Coup. I am giving the Maxxis another shot today around Tijeras. Curious how it will do on more wet terrain.

Crap

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

What a CRAP day today. After work I decided I wanted to put in some serious road miles. Well, the road bike had two flats when I went down to the garage. I was frustrated so I said okay I will just go climb a mountain on the mountain bike. Tires are flat too. WTF. I took this as a sign to NOT ride any of my bikes today. After I got back from the gym I changed all the tubes and bought some new road tires for the roadie. Josh suggested some Continental Ultra Race tires from Performance. He said he has over 1300 miles on them with no flats and they are still very light. They use Continental’s Gatorskin technology. Okay, I just want to be flat free for a while. One thing I do love about being part of the Performance Bike team thing-a-ma-jig is the points. Every time you purchase something you gain points which equals dollars which turns into a nice chunk of cash off your next purchase or whenever you decide to use it. Today’s goods were free I had enough saved up so at least ONE thing good happened today. Hope your day was better than mine.

Happy New Year!

Thursday, January 1st, 2009

I hope that everyone had a fun and safe night last night and welcomed the new year with a bang! Today is the beginning of another year, another set of resolutions, another set of goals and for many another year of dissapointments. I hope that all of you will acheive what you set out to do in 2009 and then some. This day also marks just over one year my blog has been up and running. For those of you that have been reading it since, thanks! For new viewers, thanks! I plan on adding a lot of things soon enough, the holidays were more busy than planned and I didn’t get a chance to do some blog things as I had planned. Well, I am off to break in the day with a big bowl of cereal and start taking down my Christmas tree. Cheers!
