09 Big Bear Shoot Out 1

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Today was my first actual XC Race! It proved to be a great change of pace doing something NOT on the Main Divide! Big Bear is truly beautiful this time of year and the riding is epic. We headed up Friday night to get acclimated to the 8000 foot elevation and hang with Jen and Julie for some pre-race fun. Chris and Jen took some really great and fun pics from the weekend. (I should have Jen’s pics to add to this post soon)

Race Report

Being my first race this entire event was a learning experience. My race start time was 11:22 am. We headed to the course around 10 am so I could get in some warm up time. I did a good amount of mini climbs getting warmed up and quickly realized how much riding at over 8000 feet was going to suck. I was already feeling it in my lungs and throat. They started lining us up around 10:30 so everyone would be ready for the PRO riders start at 11 am sharp. They successfully launched each class one minute after another. Around 11:15 my nerves kicked in. I was listening to the race chatter from fellow competitors and going over my game plan in my head. At 11:20 just minutes from my launch I flipped the Ipod Shuffle to ON and chose my starting song, “You’re the best around” by Joe Esposito. Don’t know it? Think, Karate Kid, now you do.

5..4..3..2..1.. and we were off! From the get-go, everyone in my class went out strong including me. The first 3 miles were brutal and proved to be the determining factor for the race. My early race thoughts of who was obviously sand-bagging in my class were true. 3-4 of the riders were big ring climbing up with ease while the rest of us “true CAT 3 beginners” were doing our best in 2-1. About 1.5 miles in my throat and lungs were hurting. The elevation got to me and for a moment I feared this race was really going to suck. Around mile 3 I started to feel better and my legs finally felt strong. The course starts off on Trail 2N10 which takes you up to basically “the main divide” on Big Bear Mtn. It traverses across the top of the mountain above Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. The next couple miles were rolling hills with enough fun downhill fire road that it made the climbs feel okay.

Around mile 6 is where the fun began. Dropping down into Plantation Trail was very welcomed. It’s a nice singletrack trail with big swoopy turns that seem to be made for 29-inch wheels. Ahhh yes! Sadly, it only lasted about 2 miles and back up the fire road I went. At this point my legs were feeling great but my throat was killing me. I had never been on the bike at such a high altitude and I was feeling it. The next few miles were tough, I was being passed by a few people I swore I wouldn’t let pass me. I got a little bummed until I ran into the drop-in point for the PRO riders. Somewhere around mile 12 both courses joined and everyone would take on the remaining 5 miles together. As if motivated by faster riders I seemed to get a second wind and left behind several riders I had shared back-and-forth maneuvers with over the previous 5 miles. I stood up on the bike, dropped a gear and smashed up the last few climbs leading back up to 2N10. Back at the top I questioned whether or not I should have just done that as my legs were yelling at me, “WE HATE YOU!”. The next few miles across the top were downhill and fast. I mashed the big ring to try and make up lost time and get to that sweet last singeltrack leading to the finish that I knew was coming.

Coming into the turn for the ST way too hot I almost went over the bars. There was a brief bit of climbing to start the singletrack and then it was all down hill baby. About a mile in I hit a pretty technical rocky downhill section that several riders walked. I knew it was going to be something gnarly because of the six photographers lined up coming into the turn. The slow moving walking riders gave me no choice but to get off my bike and walk with them. Not 200 feet past the rocks I came across a female rider that had gone OTB and wasn’t moving. There were 5 other riders with her taking care of her so I proceeded on and prayed for her quick recovery. The next mile or so to the finish was filled with rocks and roots and loose sand, enough to keep you on your toes. As I rounded the last turn and crossed the finish line I felt relieved hearing my name come across the loud speakers and seeing the smiles from my friends.

I had a great experience today and look forward to more Team Big Bear events. It would have been nice to see more ST and less FR but that’s how it goes sometime. Also, if they could find a way to close the road to vehicles that would be amazing. Almost ran into several trucks and even one moto.

Special thanks to Sean Flynn of Surf City Cyclery in Huntington Beach, CA. He asked me to fly his colors for the race and provided me the gear to do so. I wish I could have got on the podium, maybe next time. I ended up in 9th place out of 20 riders in my class. My finish time was 1 hour and 52 minutes. Not bad for my first try at high altitude. If I do the Big Bear Shoot Out 2 in July, I plan on erasing at least 20 minutes off that time. I know I can do it!

Chillin after the race waiting to see who finished after me in my class.

Quick new gear update: I picked up that awesome new lid you see on my head this week from Surf City Cyclery. It’s the 2009 Specialized S-Works Helmet World Champion Edition. Today was my first ride with it and WHAT a difference it made. Much lighter than my Fox Flux helmet and way better venting. Really didn’t feel like I was even wearing a helmet all day. The low profile look is also welcomed.

Saturday we did a little pre-riding around the lake. Check out Jen hammin it up for the cam!

2009 Traverse in the books – kinda

Monday, May 11th, 2009

Congrats to everyone who finished the Traverse this past weekend! I wish I could have been out there with all of you suffering (that sounds odd but it’s true). Part of me didn’t want to even show up at the event because I was depressed about not being able to ride. However, I knew I would be more sad if I didn’t go out and support all of my riding friends. I don’t have much to say about the race because I wasn’t in this one but it did once again remind me of how much I love mountain biking. Dropping Chris off at the start and seeing the anxious and excited looks on so many faces was such a great feeling. Driving up to 4 Corners to catch riders half way through their day covered in sweat and hunched over from the high temps brought me back a few weeks prior to race day during training rides. Considering I wasn’t on my bike I knew the next best way to help my friends would be to cheer them on as they passed and snap some pictures for them to remember all of their hard work. Below is a link to my Traverse gallery with over 200 images. They are all low resolution to help the gallery load, if you would like a high resolution wallpaper sized edited image please drop a comment to this post with your name, email address and the photo number as well as your plate number. That will help me locate the photo among the group. If you would like to purchase a print of your image please let me know.

Here are a few of my favorite pics from the day and also the ones that show you how much love people have for this sport. First up is a shot of Chris reaching 4 Corners. He made it with a half hour to spare. He had been cramping early on the day but pushed on with no excuses like a warrior all the way to the finish. Great job my friend!

tv02

Forgive me if I spell your name wrong my friend! Nekit was all smiles reaching his half way point. Imagine that, you have just worked your ass off climbing over 5000 feet and you still wear a smile. Gotta love it!

tv03

Jen made Chris a fun sign that said “Chris Hanson is a Fuzzy Bunny” hahaha

09traverse82

This is my favorite pic of the day. Gene, worked and tired and sweating from the high temps at 4 Corners. Gene you are the man and you did awesome out there!

tv04

For those of you that were wondering who was heckling you at 4 Corners, his name is Andy. Andy brought a little amusement to the hard day. My favorite motivational line from him on the day was when a female rider passed by and he said, “Just so you know I am available for full body massages to all female riders.” haha!

tv05

Donning a 24 Hours of Adrenaline jersey, Mr.131 made short work of the Traverse course. He was pumped! I believe I caught him coming across the finish line with the same expression.

tv06

Some riders didn’t stop at the finish, instead they zoomed on by looking for the beer cooler!

tv07

Chris aka CeeDubb crossing the finish line on his newly built 08 Sworks. He build this bike the day before the Traverse, this was it’s maiden voyage. It held together! Love the white tires!

tv09

Just passed the 7 hour mark Chris came across the line, exhaust, spent and ready for a nap. Good job my friend!

tv10

A few of us made our way to Riptide Sushi later that evening for some amazing nourishment and to celebrate Gene’s birthday. Chris proceeded to pound down more beverages than anyone else as per usual and began slurring his words quickly into the night. Gotta love the look on Jen’s face! She was in town supporting Chris and I for the race. Thanks again for coming out Jen it was a blast!

tv11

A few of the STR/Mtn Bike ladies joined us at Riptide also including Gene, John Early, Brenda Gilbert and Erik Brown. Thanks again for the good times everyone!

2 more coming soon

Monday, May 4th, 2009

Well it seems that I am a glutton for punishment. I signed up for 2 more races after The Traverse this weekend. Yikes! The first is the Team Big Bear Shootout on May 31st in Big Bear, California. This will be my first short distance XC race. I have been training for long distance stuff but it should be nice to be able to complete an entire event in less than 7 hours! That is followed up with the 12 Hours of Rim Nordic event which is another 12 hour race and the 2nd in the SoCal Endurance Series. This one is also located in Big Bear. I am taking this one on SOLO this time so please please wish me luck. Hopefully, I can make it up there before both races and get acclimated to the elevation a little. I have zero race experience at this elevation so I need all the training I can get.

The Traverse is just 5 short days away! Let’s all pray for good weather okay!

09 El Moro Poker Ride

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009

Mr. Weatherman was wrong, thankfully. It was suppose to rain today but instead we got clear skies and nice warmth. The annual El Moro Poker Ride put on by Share Mountain Bike Club was today so we loaded up the truck and off we went. If you have never participated in a poker run, this is the jist. You ride from checkpoint to checkpoint, at each checkpoint you draw a playing card from a deck. The person with the best hand after finding all of the checkpoints and returning to base camp wins. Share posted 6 checkpoints throughout El Moro and a 7th that was someone roaming aimlessly on a bike (aka The Joker). In past years, they handed out actual playing cars but with people quickly figuring out how easy it is to cheat that way they opted for sticker stamped cards you had to carry with you.

Craig needed to get his inner Hulk on and down some BIG 100 before we could take on this serious day of work! ha!

poker06

Our ride started at 8am. We decided to head south and hit up the lower side of the park first. This turned out to be a smart move. Checkpoint 5 was located at the base of B.F.I. and was our first hit of the day. Here is Chris taking his first card, a 2 of hearts.

poker07

Craig made short work of this rather steep section.

poker08

After climbing B.F.I. we made our way across Moro Ridge and ran into OMR from STR who was handing out cards at Checkpoint 4. Hey Craig, peace out…

poker01

We proceeded along Moro Ridge and hit Checkpoint 3 at the intersection of Missing Link. This part of the park always brings a smile to my face. Missing Link and Fence Line (you can see why it gets its name below) are fun long singletrack sections.

poker10

After reaching the end of Fence Line, Craig and Chris had some decision making to do. We decided to head down Deer Canyon and hit Checkpoint 6 the climb Ticketron and loop around to Checkpoint 1.

poker09

Chris doing a little leg burnin’

poker11

We hit checkpoint 1 and got our cards. Craig’s hand was looking good, Chris and I were SOL.

poker03

After leaving checkpoint 1 we ran smack into The Joker! This meant we had 6 of 7 checkpoints in the bag. She is also the Share Club President.

poker04

Sooooo my jersey is a little big. I think I need to shrink this baby up a bit. My gear ended up looking more like a “load”.

poker02

With only 1 card left to get, we headed back across Fence Line, Missing Link and down Elevator. This was my first time down Elevator and it won’t be my last. Really fun high speed downhill section. At the base was checkpoint 2 and our last stop of the day. We then made our way back to camp.

poker05

Although the event wasn’t a race, we ended up reaching base camp first which was a nice feeling. The few people that followed us also didn’t have all 7 checkpoints accomplished. Yes! There was a small vendor alley setup for the raffle and lunch festivities.

poker13

New Belgium Brew sponsored the event and gave away free drinks and raffled off some cases of beer. Nice!

poker14

Rock n Road Cyclery also made an appearance and gave out come gift certificates towards the raffle.

poker15

The boys from The Path Bike Shop were ready to repair your bike if needed and also donated some gift cards, water bottles, shirts and jerseys.

poker16

We heard there were 119 participants this year. It looked kind of scarce on the trails but when the lunch bell rang it looked more like 200.

poker19

The no beer sign was guarding everyone’s bikes.

poker18

There was a ton of good schwag given out at the raffle including a single speed KHS Solo One bike and a Schwinn Fat Tire beach cruiser.

poker26

The event was super fun and I would definitely do it again. If I had to complain about anything it would be the $10 lunch fee. $10 for a hot dog? Seriously? Also, Crank Brothers pulled a no-show and bummed many people out including myself. I had some pedals that needed work. On our way out I snapped some pics of some cool bikes, enjoy.
