Yet another Iphone app for the day. FlyTunes seems to be the next best thing when it comes to gettting WiFi music, or is it? Here is some info from their site.
How does FlyTunes work?
FlyTunes exploits the fact that tens of thousands of Internet radio stations already exist and play music but are looking for bigger audiences. At the same time, most consumers have broadband Internet service, and many have cell phones or portable players on which they could enjoy this music.
FlyTunes software is installed on your PC or Mac and acts as a “middleman” by providing an easy to use interface on your portable device, and, (behind the scenes) by knowing what music is being played on each Internet radio station. You can select from genre-based pre-built channels, or you can build your own channel by entering a few of your favorite artists.
FlyTunes then constructs a new channel that is based on your preferences and you can further optimize it as the music plays by flagging favorite tunes, or songs you never want to hear again. As you listen to it and continue to personalize it, the station gets better and better. This type of personalization (unheard of in traditional broadcast media) is possible because of FlyTunes unique position between the broadcasters and the listener.
FlyTunes pre-caches 30 minutes of music to your iPhone when it senses a good wireless connection (basically as soon as you start listening to your station) – so, not only can you pause, rewind and fast forward through the station’s music (impossible with satellite radio), but FlyTunes is totally immune to signal drop for up to 30 minutes. If you know you are going to need more offline time (for example you are going on a 4 hour plane ride), FlyTunes can precache as much music as you want on your device.
An additional bonus t0 FlyTunes’ music caching technology is that battery drain is significantly lower than other streaming services, because FlyTunes uses the wireless connection for a few seconds at a time, then turns it off. In fact, filling the thirty-minute cache of music uses just over one minute of airtime. On a streaming receiver, that would be 30 minutes of connection time.
It all sounds pretty good except for the part about pre-caches. Does that mean it is going to download files to your Iphone all the time so you can stay current with your FlyTunes music? I don’t think very many people are going to like that.
How does FlyTunes really stack up against satellite radio?
