Tour de Foothills

Well, I finally did it. I think I “officially” embraced my inner roadie. Today started at 4am, much much too early, getting ready for the Tour de Foothills Metric Century event located in Upland, CA. These roadies I tell you they start their rides way too freakin early! The ride started at 7am which mean I had to be up at 4am to prep, leave by 5am, arrive by 6am to check in and get ready, etc… Ugh. This was my first official roadie event. Riding this event also meant I was missing out on the final 12 Hours of Temecula event I had planned on doing with other friends. I was bummed but I was still on a bike.

Pre-ride check in went smooth, pretty much the same as any mtn bike event. The bathroom situation was a joke, I seriously hope they look into fixing that for next year. As everyone gathered at the start they were handing out Livestrong wrist bands in support of the foundation. That was pretty cool and they even held a moment of silence for riders that lost their battle with cancer.

Out of the gates it was utter mayhem. There was absolutely no organization to this event aside from police blocking traffic for the first 10 miles, which was nice. Knowing how anal most roadies are and watching road events on TV, I figured there would be much more organization and a somewhat “uniform” riding stance throughout. Nope. Everyone was out for themselves, slow guys would dart up ahead thinking they could hang with the fast guys only to cause a cluster fuck, fast guys would arrogantly shove their way through the back of the pack when they should have started in front to begin win. At least with mtn bike races they section you off by class. Considering the amount of people on today’s ride it would have been nice to see them let groups go in waves. Since there was no official clock, it wasn’t like anyone was really racing so going in waves would only have helped traffic. I spent the entire day riding with my friend Jay who is an experienced road racer and even he commented at the lack of organization. I was still having a blast regardless.

Around mile 15 is where my day turned for the worse. I dropped my chain coming around a sharp incline. Then I dropped it again about a mile down the road. Then the chain froze about 5 miles later getting stuck between the front rings. WTF. I was pretty upset because all of this down time meant Jay and the rest of my friends had left me in the dust. I was far back and there was no way I was going to make up the time. After finally getting back on the road I made my way to the first rest stop and spotted Jay. He was just finishing up dropping the kids off at the pool, which left me enough time to catch back up. From there we hit the first climb of the day, a twisty corkscrew type of a road that is fairly steep but short. I got up it without a problem although my left leg was cramping a little bit.(one of those days)

At the top, the course continued on a slow gradual incline all the way to Mt. Baldy Rd. This would be the only real climbing on the day and finally gave us a little work to do. The climb up the mountain felt good and they had another rest stop at the top. I didn’t stop even though the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies were calling my name! The descent coming down the opposite side was a 40mph blast for about 10 miles. I caught back up with Jay again after he dropped me on the climb and we hung together for the remainder of the ride. Somewhere around the 48 mile mark we took a wrong turn and ended up taking the long way around back to the course. Fortunately, both Jay and I have Garmin GPS systems and Jay having downloaded last years course to his last night made finding our way back on track a piece of cake. The remaining 15 or so miles was pretty flat and we ended up catching up to many of the half metric century riders who started their ride I believe 2 hours after us. They latched on to our wheels and followed us in to the finish.

I had planned on riding with Josh, James, John and Marcel as well but after all of my mechanical issues I knew I wouldn’t catch them. Thanks to all of you guys and Jay for riding with me today and suggesting I sign up for the event. I had a great time and will definitely be doing more road events in the future. Gotta train for Vision Quest you know!

101 miles & Bike Review

Sorry I have been neglecting the blog lately my adoring fans haha. I have been going through some server troubles. Those troubles are almost fully resolved. As you can see to the right I have added a flickr filter. Over the past few weeks I got back into using flickr for quick uploading of random photos from my iphone. I loaded up some old race photos and more as well so feel free to poke around. Certain model photo shoots are marked “friends only” and will be invisible to you unless you have an account and add me. Go for it.

The past few weeks have been a whirl wind. Solvang, Rose costume party, Arizona trip, tons of work, and leaving for Vegas this week for SEMA. Knowing I would be off the bike for a week I decided to put in some work today. I set out to put down 100 miles and I did just that. I snapped a few kinda boring pics along the way!

I left the house and instead of my normal route into the canyon I opted to head down Bake and hang a right on Irvine Blvd. There are some good long stretches on this route where I could put in some good Zone 2 & 3 times.

The bike path system around Irvine is awesome. The city has done a great job creating a bike way that keeps bikers away from vehicles.

Around mile 30 I hit Back Bay in Newport Beach. I should have snapped a pic of all the photographers found littering the shores. I just passed them when I took this pic but I counted at least 40. Looked like they were shooting the birds along the water. Maybe there was some crazy mating thing going on! Hey oh!

When I hit PCH I latched on to this Sho-Air dude. We traded off some drafting for about 25 miles up into Huntington Beach and Bolsa Chica. From there I hit mile 52 and decided it was time to head back.

Mile 81 landed at my Mom’s front door. She made me a nice sandwich and I loaded up on more fluids. Love you Mom!

I feel like now that I have over 300 miles on the new bike I can offer a mini review. For those who don’t follow my blog this bike is a 2010 Specialized Roubaix Pro SRAM.

What I really enjoy about riding this bike:

The weight. At 15lbs this bike is a feather compared to my previous Allez. The BB is super stiff and very responsive. Standing to climb or sprint the power transfer from your legs to the bike is instant.

SRAM Red. This is the best road group I have used to date. My Allez ran Shimano 105 and my old Roubaix ran SRAM Rival. The Red stuff is super crisp and consistent. The double-tap shifter levers are a welcome change from the Shimano system. I never enjoyed having to shift the entire brake lever all the way over. The brakes on the bike are SRAM Force which is one level down from Red but from what I hear are just as nice. I can definitely stop on a dime that’s for sure.

Carbon. This is a no brainer and anyone going from an aluminum bike to a carbon bike will agree. The feel of carbon is second to none. Smooth and comfy best describe it.

What I will change about this bike:

The tires. The bike came with Specialized Roubaix Pro II tires with their flak jacket protection. I haven’t had any problems or flats with these tires but they just don’t roll smooth or fast. The Michelin Pro Race II and III tires as well as the S-Works Mondo tires both ran faster. However, I have gotten multiple flats on both of those tires. I plan on riding the crap out of these tires until they are flat and then looking for another option.

Compact cranks. This bike only comes with compact cranks. They are super nice and have carbon arms but they are compact which means you will be dropped in the pack. Great for climbing tall hills but bad for keeping up. I plan on swapping out the spider and rings soon.

Pedals/Shoes. I am still rocking mtb stuff and will eventually get a pair of nice road shoes and pedals. When I can afford it. I don’t wanna go cheap so I will wait until I can get what I want.

Overall I love the bike. I will report back again when I start having problems (eventually everything fails). So far so good though!

2010 sexiness

Ran across this image today on BikeRadar.com of the new 2010 Specialized Tarmac SL3 that will make it’s first public appearance next week on the Tour de France. The new Tarmac is going to weigh in at an astounding 13.1lbs without pedals. Damn, that’s light! Looks like the 2010 Roubaix is going to be essentially exactly the same for the new year. I am in no way a roadie enough to drop this kind of coin on a road bike but damn is it sexy.

Crap

What a CRAP day today. After work I decided I wanted to put in some serious road miles. Well, the road bike had two flats when I went down to the garage. I was frustrated so I said okay I will just go climb a mountain on the mountain bike. Tires are flat too. WTF. I took this as a sign to NOT ride any of my bikes today. After I got back from the gym I changed all the tubes and bought some new road tires for the roadie. Josh suggested some Continental Ultra Race tires from Performance. He said he has over 1300 miles on them with no flats and they are still very light. They use Continental’s Gatorskin technology. Okay, I just want to be flat free for a while. One thing I do love about being part of the Performance Bike team thing-a-ma-jig is the points. Every time you purchase something you gain points which equals dollars which turns into a nice chunk of cash off your next purchase or whenever you decide to use it. Today’s goods were free I had enough saved up so at least ONE thing good happened today. Hope your day was better than mine.
